My entry for the :iconclub-tutu: February 2008 Contest. The theme was Ballet Couples.

I've based my image on the Pas des Fleurs from act two of "The Talisman".

The story of "The Talisman" follows that of a young Hindu goddess, Niriti, who must visit the Earth to test her heart against the temptations of earthly love. Before her journey, her mother gives her a star from her crown, with the stipulation that if she loses it, she cannot return to heaven. If it is lost, the only way to recover it is for the star to be freely returned by whatever mortal comes to possess it. The wind god, Vayu, travels with her to protect her on her journey.
As the story progresses, Niriti loses the star to a mortal man, Nourredin.
In the second act, she comes to Nourredin in the guise of the Goddess of Flowers and performs a sort of Pas de Deux with the mortal. Vayu is also there with her the entire time, and leads the Grand Pas des Fleurs after Niriti and Nourredin leave the stage.

:star: :star: :star:

Now watching that part from Act II online [link] , I noticed, Vayu multiple times seems to try to separate the pair and seems to try to convince Niriti to get away from the mortal man.

Given, I'm not a ballet expert, and this is only my interpretation... But it felt like a bit of a love triangle to me.
The role of protector taken by Vayu made me think of Fakir, and I think his strong dancing style would suit a deity that controls the wind and storms. And the possession of the star talisman representing who held Niriti's love reminded me of the importance of Prince Mytho's heart shards to the story of Princess Tutu.

So I've drawn my interpretation of the dance preceding the Grand Pas des Fleurs, with Niriti (Ahiru) dancing with Nourredin (Mytho). Nourredin holds the star talisman just within Niriti's reach, but she cannot simply take it back. Vayu (Fakir) dances desperately in the background, unable to pull her away from him, or take the star talisman back for her by force.

Obviously, I've had a lot of fun with Hindu deity inspired ballet costumes. (Ahiru is NOT topless; she's wearing a leotard slightly darker than her skin tone and decorated to imitate the gold jewelry seen on statues of the Vedic Gods.)

There are blue paint designs on Fakir (and yes, his scar is also there) to imitate the blue skin of Vayu. I did an alternate version where is skin is all blue, but it didn't look as good, so I went with the artistic interpretation.

It's lovely. You may not be a ballet expert but their positions and expressions really give the feeling to it ^_^ Just one thing though, they seem less on ballet and more on maybe interpretative or some other dance form.
I think it's just the ballet student in me but Ahiru's posture isn't right, even if they're in mid-dance, or something ._.
But besides that it's amazing ^_^ Great job on the coloring, and I like how Fakir turned out.

Thank you!

Yeah, my expressions and anatomy are improving these days, but I'm still weak (and new) at drawing actual ballet poses. (It is intended to be mid-dance/ However:) Ahiru is seriously overbalanced backwards, and Fakir's entire left side should be repositioned to make it ballet accurate. :sigh: I killed all day coloring it though. I'll just have to address that weakness my next piece.
Thank you for the critique!

Yeah, well it's just me XD I used to have the job of fixing the kids' posture back when I took ballet. That's one of the reasons I love PT and one of the reasons I'm noticing Ahiru's knees O_o (bent)
Cuz ballerinas basically have to keep their posture at all times. But that's all; I think that'll win XD
Oh, and could you consider the note I sent to the club? Only if it's okay. If not, that's okay too.

This is absolutely stunning. I love the colors that you picked, and these three look REALLY good in the Hindu style costumes. I especially love Fakir's face, he looks so desperate and sad at the same time. Any chance I could beg a detail shot of it from you?

I love the body art, too. I feel like it adds another element of movement to the piece, adding to the feel of desperation that I get from him.

The shading and the colors . . . . *happy sigh*
Intense! Yes, which is fabulous, except it looks a little non-ballet like with Fakir and Ahiru. They speak interpretive dance but not ballet. I can see how you tried to get Ahiru to mold into a ballet position, but Fakir seems more like he's about to go into a charge (paso doble like or something). Maybe if he was jumping with a leg split it may appear more like a ballet pose. Ahiru's body just doesn't seem right. She looks like she's doing a bit of the cancan with the high leg she's got going there.

The colours and detail impress me the most. And those folds! Aiyaiyai!! <3 They are splendid! I have to say this is your most impressive fold work I have seen yet! And overall this is one of my favourites in your gallery. I love the atmosphere you pulled off in this (which the background colour contributes to the intensity of the piece as it works a great contrast and compliment to the colours you chose in the foreground). The colouring job is fantastic and I love how you did the gold.

I really could go on on this wonderful artwork, but I'll stop. Though there are some other [smaller] things that could be changed I believe they are easily overlooked. What you should be more concerned about is making this look more like a ballet than an interpretive dance. Other than that this is absolutely amazing and I hope you don't mind, but it's about to be fav-ed. <3

(Psst! I only went so far because of your "Advanced Critique" setting. Please understand I say all this in love and only to help you out. I hope you don't take any offense as I meant none.)
